Environmental Justice

Executive Order 12898 - Federal Actions to Address Environmental Justice in Minority Populations and Low-Income Populations - was issued by President Clinton in 1994. Its purpose is to focus federal attention on the environmental and human health effects of federal actions on minority and low-income populations with the goal of achieving environmental protection for all communities.


EJ and the Plan

NYMTC undertakes an Environmental Justice Assessment in the development of the Plan to ensure that the benefits and burdens of strategic regional transportation investments are not disproportionately affecting minority and low-income populations.

Appendix D of Moving Forward includes an overview of federal requirements and specifically how NYMTC incorporates EJ into its planning process.

Title VI

On February 11, 1994, Executive Order 12898 was issued to direct federal agencies to incorporate achieving environmental justice into their mission.
