Regional Planning Activities | New York Metropolitan Transportation Council

Created in 1982 as the MPO for New York City, Long Island, and the lower Hudson Valley, NYMTC provides a collaborative planning forum to address transportation planning activities from a regional perspective; undertakes studies for transportation improvements; forecasts future conditions and needs; pools the resources and expertise of its member agencies to plan for transportation and development in the region; and makes decisions on the use of federal transportation funds.

Performance Management

MAP-21 establishes national performance goals for the federal-aid highway and transit programs.

Mega-Regional Planning

NYMTC and its member agencies form partnerships across borders to address planning issues that recognize no boundaries.

Resiliency Planning

The region is implementing plans and strategies to adapt and protect its critical infrastructure from extreme weather events and climate risks.

Strategies and plans are being developed to enhance pedestrian and bicycle facilities and amenities now and over the next 25 years.

Funding Programs

NYMTC manages the solicitation for and competitive selection of projects for federal funding programs TAP, CMAQ, and Section 5310.

Meeting the challenges of a growing region in a sustainable fashion has become a primary focus of NYMTC members.

Improving mobility and safety for all users are key measures of the quality of the region's transportation system and quality of life.

Community Planning Workshops

NYMTC collaborates with local communities in our planning area to promote projects through workshops that address mobility, safety, and development issues in population centers and downtowns.
