About the SAWG
In April 2000, NYMTC established the Safety Advisory Working
Group (SAWG) to facilitate interagency discussion, exchange information,
address safety and advise its members on issues dealing with transportation
safety. SAWG is also tasked with assuring that safety planning
is considered in NYMTC's metropolitan transportation planning
process.
In deliberations to date, SAWG has identified pedestrian safety
as a leading topic of interagency concern and therefore focused
on this issue.
The Working Group recommended that NYMTC set aside planning funds
for a Regional Pedestrian Study to determine the status of pedestrian
safety and the related investment needs in the region. That study,
which began in the fall of 2005, identifies pedestrian safety
issues and recommends measures to improve pedestrian safety in
the region. Ultimately, the results of the study will be incorporated
into the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) which is to be updated
in 2009.
