Hudson River Valley Greenway Link Study
Linking Greenways along the Hudson River

Bicycle ridership and the need for recreational space continue to rise while infrastructure that promotes its use has not continued at the same pace. It is important to provide facilities for walking and bicycling in order to encourage their use. Greenways, unlike a strict bicycle-only segregated lane, is a long, narrow piece of land, often used for pedestrian and bicycle traffic. There are disjointed bicycling and pedestrian facilities along the Hudson River stretching from communities in upper Manhattan, through the Bronx, and into the City of Yonkers. The users of these facilities include those who are commuting to work, conducting personal errands, and using the routes for recreational purposes. Is there a way to connect the various bicycle and pedestrian routes into one continuous link for bicyclists? It is the goal of the Hudson River Valley Greenway Link Study to determine the best way to create such infrastructure.

The Manhattan Waterfront Greenway along the Hudson River from Battery Park in lower Manhattan to northern Manhattan is one of many projects that are shaping an interconnected network of multi-purpose greenway corridors in the Hudson River Valley Greenway, which includes the development of a trail or pathway system consistent with the greenway criteria connecting the City of New York to Saratoga County.

Building on previous work by community interests in Manhattan, the Bronx and the City of Yonkers, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council (NYMTC) has completed the Hudson River Valley Greenway Link Study to define an implementation approach and conceptual designs for a pathway connecting the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway in northern Manhattan with the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail in Yonkers, via Riverdale in the northwest Bronx. In doing so, the study has laid the groundwork for the development of a critical missing link in the southernmost segment of the larger Hudson River Valley Greenway.

The Greenway Link Study was accomplished in two phases. The first phase, which was undertaken from 2008 through 2010, involved a complete analysis of routing alternatives, including a literature review, two public workshops, the development of goals and objectives for the study, a gap analysis and relevant data collection. This phase culminated in the release of an Alternatives Analysis report in September 2010. The second phase, which followed immediately, developed a conceptual plan for the Greenway Link from the Alternatives Analysis. The resulting preliminary preferred routing for the Greenway as part of a multi-stage implementation plan and featured basic design features for the preferred routing, including photo simulations and typical sections, so that preliminary design for the Greenway Link could be initiated once the study concluded.
