The Transportation Enhancement Program (TEP) provides federal funding to encourage the construction of transportation projects designed to improve communities. Proposals approved for funding through TEP generally integrate the needs of communities into special transportation-related infrastructure projects that add value to the surface transportation system. TEP funds help support unique preservation, beautification and environmentally sensitive projects across the region.

These community-based projects help strengthen the cultural, aesthetic and environmental aspects of the region’s intermodal transportation system, including facilities for pedestrians and bicycles, safety and educational activities, landscaping and other scenic beautification and historic preservation projects.

Applications are now available for the NYSDOT 2008 TEP program.  Applicants may be developed by a municipality or non-profit incorporated group, but must be sponsored by either a municipality, state agency or public authority.  The deadline for submitting an application for this year is June 27, 2008
NYMTC recorded a webcast of the March 18, 2008 workshop to facilitate those who were unable to attend in person. To access the NYMTC webcast click here

There are 12 activities eligible for TEP funding, including improvements to bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure, scenic and historic preservation, archeological planning and research, and environmental mitigation. For a complete listing of all eligible activities, consult the TEP Guidebook below. TEP is not a grant program. Rather, it is a program that requires project sponsors to pay all project costs prior to requesting and receiving reimbursement from appropriate federal or state funding sources.  The federally funded share is generally up to 80% of the project cost limited to $2.5 million per project.

A total of $34 million in Federal Transportation Enhancement Program (TEP) funds was awarded to 31 projects in the NYMTC Region in 2006. For a complete list of the 2006 TEP projects awarded in this region, click here.
