The NYMTC Census Database

The NYMTC Census database is a collection of raw and modified data obtained from a variety of Census products. The database provides transportation organizations and other users with vital information on social, economic (travel), housing, and demographic characteristics for the NYMTC region.

Currently, the NYMTC Census database is made up of three sections to help the user find the appropriate information.

1. Census Data Highlights for NYMTC Region

  1. NYMTC's  Interim Census and American Community Survey (ACS) data query tool
    – Provides tables retrieved from data query. Only two transportation-related variables; travel mode and travel time available at the moment.
  2. Census 2000
    – Shows the highlights of social, economic, housing, demographic characteristics, and Journey to Work.
  3. American Community Survey (ACS)
    – Provides tables of social, economic, housing, demographic characteristics.
  4. NYS DOT Transportation Trends, Surveys & Statistics
    – Provides compiled information from 2000 Census, Summary File 3 to assist transportation analysts in examining how commutation patterns have changed over time.

2. Census Databases and Data Extraction Tools

  1. American Fact Finder 
    AFF is an electronic system for access and dissemination of the Census Bureau data on the internet. The system offers prepackaged data products and user-selected data tables and maps from the 1990 and 2000 Census of Population and Housing, the 1997 Economic Census, and the American Community Survey.
  2. Census Transportation Planning Package CTPP
    It is a cooperative effort sponsored by the State Departments of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration under a pooled funding arrangement with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
  3. Public Use Microdata Samples (PUMS) 
    PUMS files contain records for a sample of housing units with information on the characteristics of each unit and each person in it. The files are available for ACS and Decennial Census data.
  4. Transportation Research Sources
    NYMTC compiled a various of links of widely-used data sources for transportation planning and policy professionals.

3. Other Essential Census Products

  1. OnTheMap
    It is a web-based mapping and reporting application that shows where workers are employed and where they live. It also provides companion reports on age, earnings, industry distributions, and local workforce indicators.
  2. Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics (LEHD)
    LEHD is potentially an alternate/additional source of place of work and flow data. It provides Quarterly Workforce Indicators (QWI), a set of economic indicators (including employment, job creation, wages, and worker turnover) that can be queried by different levels of geography (state, county, metro, and workforce investment area).
  3. Census Bureau TIGER/Line Files
    The U.S. Census Bureau makes its TIGER (Topologically Integrated Geographic Encoding and Referencing) Line files available for download. These files can be used with GIS software to map Census geography.
