THE NYMTC CENSUS DATABASE
The NYMTC census database is a collection of raw and modified data obtained from a variety of census products. The database provides the New York State Department of Transportation, metropolitan transportation organizations, and other users with vital information.
Many types of users benefit from the NYMTC Census Database. Transportation specialists can use the database to analyze patterns and characteristics of commuter travel. Metropolitan planning organizations can use the database to address issues of traffic congestion. Public transit agencies can use it to plan transit investments, identify areas in need of increased service, determine efficient transit routes, and better address the needs of the disabled.
The Database is made up of four sections to help the user find the appropriate information:
Census Data Highlights for NYMTC Region provides users with concise summaries of general demographic information about the NYMTC Region.
General Census Products contains basic background information about the variety of data products the Census Bureau offers and offers a selection of NYMTC-related data from each product.
Census Databases and Data Extraction Tools offers information about the different forms in which census data is made available and various ways it can be accessed, as well as samples of NYMTC-related data.
Glossary of Terms provides links to glossaries to better help users make sense of the data.

DATA EXTRACTION TOOLS
Census
Transportation Planning Package CTPP is a
cooperative effort sponsored by the State Departments of Transportation and the
Federal Highway Administration under a pooled funding arrangement with the
American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
Public Use Microdata Samples
(PUMS) PUMS files contain records for a sample of housing units
with information on the characteristics of each unit and each person in it. The
files are available for ACS and Decennial Census data.
American
Fact Finder AFF is an electronic system for access and dissemination of
the Census Bureau data on the internet. The system offers prepackaged data
products and user-selected data tables and maps from the 1990 and 2000 Census
of Population and Housing, the 1997 Economic Census, and the American Community
Survey.
New York State Department of Transportation NYSDOT
has compiled information from 2000 Census, Summary File 3 to assist
transportation analysts in examining how commutation patterns have changed over
time.
Transportation Research provides links to other Census-related sites that may be of interest to transportation professionals.
Census Bureau Website provides a variety of tools to help users
understand the data.
